Vall de Xaló” muscatel wins Els Bodeguers blind wine tasting competition 2012
Last Tuesday a panel of seven judges evaluated close to twenty samples of sweet wines and mistelas produced by wine cellars ascribed to the DO Alicante and Valencia
The conference room at RuralCaja centre played host last Tuesday to an activity that is unusual in the wine world: a blind wine tasting of sweet muscatel wines. This year’s competition was organised between the Proava association and the Els Bodeguers collective, in collaboration with the Designation of Origin Alicante and Valencia, as well as the Consulate for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Close to twenty samples from wine cellars in Alicante and Valencia attended the competition with the Muscatel “Vall de Xaló” produced by BodegasXaló, under the Designation of Origin Alicante certification, declared the winner. In second place was the Mistela Muscatel of Turís created by La Baronía de Turís and supported with the Designation of Origin Valencia stamp. Third prize fell to the sweet Anima de Cup from the J.Belda wine cellar (DO Valencia).
It was the first time that the wine tasting panel from Els Bodeguers opened their doors to the public during the annual wine tasting competition. The components on the tasters table, presided over by Eduardo Mestres, once president of the Els Bodeguers collective and the Proava association, went a step further than the original aim of the tasting not only with a notable difference to the usual appearance of the Muscatel liquor but he also decided to blindfold the wine tasting judging panel.
This taste testing was one of the activities programmed for the Saint Valentine holiday with the objective of promoting the mistelas and sweet muscatel wines, traditional wines in the Valencia Community that each time generates more interest in the local and international markets.
